Im writing this from a small island, as usual, but not as small as some Ive known. Why on earth should I think youll be interested? The answer to that lies in two white-ant-eaten suitcases and (forgive me) two bin liners stuffed with unanswered letters. Do you know how heavy paper weighs? If you do, youll know how precious those letters are to me. Some have been to the other side of the world and back. Others arrived just days ago. Who am I then, to attract the attention of strangers who humble me by sharing their very souls on paper? And who are you? Ill have a go at the first question. I hope someone out there might provide some answers to the second. In Brief: I am a woman who, in the early 1980s, answered an ad to spend a year on an uninhabited island with a man I didnt know and landed the job. I never imagined Id write a book about it but I did. Its called Castaway and if you like you can get a closer look at it (and me) on: Amazon.co.uk |

Islands, or a remote lifestyle, became something of an addiction for me after that - especially following extraordinary media exposure. Before that, I was a Runaway. (See z-lists and libraries until its reprinted) and afterwards I was amazingly a new kind of celebrity. If youre British you may remember Russell Harty (RIP) and have heard of Terry Wogan, David Kid Jensen and Joan Bakewell. If youre from the U.S., David Lettermen may ring a bell. But Ill tell you more about all that later and how it felt to go from desert island survivor to dolly on the box. My most recent adventure took place in the outer Solomon Islands. I ended up writing about that too. (Faraway - see Waterstones website and Amazon.co.uk and BOL) These days, I largely shy away from the glare of publicity. I love my new island and just want to share it with a select few. |
